Another cover page to add to the list and it's indeed a 'cover page' because the photo litterally covers the whole cover. It's former classmate Susanne's promotion project in biopharmaceutic science. It's all about mice and cutting them into pieces or Modulation of Genes Involved in Inflammation and Cell Death in Atherosclerosis-susceptible mice. What I understood of it, is that it's about lengthening the life cycle of specific cells. Anyway, it's a nice print booklet of >100 pages and a welcome addition to my publications portfolio.

The cool thing about Berlin is that it's full of open spaces. Berlin seems to be on the move almost permanently, but I'm not sure it will be 'just as cool' by the time all the open space gets filled up.

Serendipity: to make discoveries, by accident and sagacity, of things not in quest of.

Serendipity is a very interesting phenomenon and it sometimes leads to big inventions and breakthroughs. Not this time, but at least it did something cool to my photo of the entrance to an apartment building at Karl Marx Strasse in Berlin. I meant to correct its distortion around the edges and then clicked on Distort -> Polar Coordinates. And look what came out..

The Palast der Republik is and soon used to be a remarkable building in the very centre of Berlin. It was constructed in 1970 to serve as a status symbol for the German Democratic Republic (DDR), but also for it's people. It hosted the most modern shopping mall of that time and was also home to the DDR Parliament for a long time.

The building itself is astonishingly ugly and local politicians recently decided that it should be demolished. Which is something that will for sure be regretted in a few years time, as this was a unique building which very well represents 50 years of communistic rule.

Another small article in this week's LeCool Amsterdam. I already reserved the official opening of the World Press Photo exhibition on April 24 for my next article.

By the way, what's the difference between 'agenda' and 'diary', can anyone tell me that'? I was suspecting some transatlantic background, but haven't been able to trace it..

While most EU citizens keep discussing the pros and cons of the Euro - and even the whole concept of a European Union - Slovenia is likely to be the first of the new member states to join the Euro zone. By doing so, they would give up their current money, the Slovenian Tolar.

Some Dutch nationalistic nostalgia below..

I've been on the outlook for interesting PhotoLogs to spice up my link section (on the right hand side of your screen), but so far this project has proved quite unsuccessful. Help from the Dutch Bloggie Awards has come handy and I am happy to recommend you a visit to Thomas Slijper's photolog about everyday life in Amsterdam and surroundings.

I also looked up some everyday life photos in the PhotoLogiX archive and came up with this one: a black guy waiting at bus stop Dapperstraat, well-known from the poem 'randomly happy in Dapper Street', which ends like this: Alles is veel voor wie niet veel verwacht - Het leven houdt zijn wonderen verborgen - Tot het ze, opeens, toont in hun hogen staat - Dit heb ik bij mijzelven overdacht - Verregend, op een miezerigen morgen - Domweg gelukkig, in de Dapperstraat.. Sorry about the Dutch. The second bus stop is in Southampton, England / provided as a bonus to bus stop number one.

Hero or war criminal? Slobodan Milosevic is no longer attending this discussion but it's still incredible how one single person can be seen in two almost opposite ways. Show somebody who doesn't know anything about the Second World War the film "Der Untergang" and he or she will likely to feel at least a little bit sympathy for the main character. At least - more than for his followers.

The capital city of Serbia, Belgrade 'the white city', has been in the news quite often during the last few days. It's an interesting city with an atmosphere that is quite similar to Berlin. It shares the peculiarity that it historically forms a crossroad between East and West. Unlike big parts of the Serb-Croatian boarder and the Bosnian surroundings, little of Belgrade makes a visitor think of war. It's a good place to spend a spring day, just like this one in April of last year.

Smoking cannabis ('blowing') is popular in Holland and yes you can do it anywhere you like. But there's also a downside to it, as you can read in this (Dutch) article. For translation: try Altavista's Bablefish.

Spring has started! It actually did yesterday night around 19h30 CET. On the March Equinox (just like the September one) , everywhere over the globe, the Sun rises true east (parallel to lines of latitude), sets at true west, and the length of the day equals the length of the night. For people on the North Pole, it gets day and the sun stays up for the next 6 months. For the South Pole, it's the start of a six-month-long night.

And in Holland, we're only waiting for spring weather and seems to take ages before just that warm sunny spring day arrives.

Although digital photography is very practical and allows for quick processing, I'm still a big fan of plain old chemical photography. There's no way you can see your photos before you take your film to the shop and wait for a few days. Which forces you to spend all your concentration to a shot and really make the best out of it in one go. And sometimes, you get nice surprises when you have forgotten about the photos which are already on the film from the last time you used your camera.

That is exactly what happened with this photo. I took it on the way back from Berlin and then forgot about it. Used the same film later on and then found this image of the Volkswagen factory in Wolfsburg, where I was lucky enough to spot an InterCity Express (ICE) after only fifteen minutes of waiting time..

All those living in the Netherlands will, in equal cases, be treated equally. Discrimination based on religion, vision, political orientation, race, gender or whichever possible ground is prohibited.

Quite a nice phrase for a national constitution to start off with. A new political unit, the "Freedom Party" wants to abolish this article for the sake of freedom of expression. No idea how that works or even relates but it makes me think of those good old days back in 1933.

PhotoLogiX FAQ

::: What type of cameras do you use?

- Olympus OM-1 (1972)
- Nikon F80 (1999)
- Fuji S3 Pro (2005)

Nevertheless, I'm most aware that the type of camera is by far not the most important ingredient for interesting photography. For that - and other - reasons, I only took some disposable cameras with me on my trip to South Africa at the end of last year. Some results below:
