Last week, a Ryanair plane accidentally landed on the wrong airport after the pilot mistook local mililary airport Ballykelly for Londonderry on visual approach. The story itself may be funny, as long as you don't realise that over 50% of plane crashes are due to pilot error..

"He may have been around for 60 years, but 'The Little Prince' is unlikely to grow old any day soon". France is celebrating the 60th birthday of the little prince this month. For those of you who don't know this book: it is about the struggle between authenticity and whatever is considered to be universal truth.

Central Europe is once again touched by major floodings. It's almost becoming a tradition. In 2002, large parts of former Eastern Germany, Czech Republic but also Romania disappeared under water:

Playboy today introduced its magazine in Indonesian, but in a somewhat downgraded version without any nudity. So far, nobody seems to be satisfied: potential buyers think it's too boring to be true, while religious groups are threatening to violently keep shop-owners from selling the magazine.

Today is the day! Cannonball runners are GO! I'm in a team of three, we have the slowest car but the fastest brains. No idea from where I will be posting tomorrow's updatum, I'm suspecting the border area between Czech Republic and Germany.

Arriving in Paris was quite a big surprise and I didn't take my digital camera with me, so here's an archive photo. Fresh ones will hopefully be available by tomorrow evening.

Back from Paris and onward to Warsaw. I'm taking a night train tomorrow evening to arrive on Wednesday morning. After two days of meetings, I will take it easy on the way back and hopefully spend some time in either Frankfurt am Oder (DE), or Poznan or Torun (PL).

A man's gotta do, what a man's gotta do. Sometimes, that also includes playing with Barbies, like last night. The results of the shoot will probably be used for a poster announcing a youth talent contest in The Hague.

Slight change of plans. I got up this morning at 4 and plan to leave around 6 to go to Warsaw, Poland. On my way and back, I plan to pay short visits to the cities of Frankfurt am Oder, Poznan and Duisburg. I hope to be back on Friday afternoon.

Following last weekend's unexpected trip to Paris, I was planning to share some photos of that experience on short notice. Unfortunately, I have not been able to have them processed before I left for Poland so here's a nice old photo.
If I did take a photo at the same place last Saturday, it would have looked exactly the same. Somehow, the evenings close to the equinoxes (21 March, 21 October) are very suitable for evening photography with existing light. The blue sky, under condition that it is recorded just after sunset, can very well be captured and guarantees a much more harmonic image than one with a plain black background.
By the way, be ready for many new photos to be posted this weekend!

Once upon a time, there was a wonderful train that daily left Hoek van Holland to reach as fas east as Moscow, but these days are long gone. Good old international travelling is no longer what it used to be, for the following reasons:
1) Holland is a small country so you can get anywhere within 3 hours time;
2) High-speed connections with Paris and Cologne have replaced those to Italy,
Czech Republic, Russia, Denmark and Poland;
3) NS (Dutch railways) International are conscientiously killing off all remaining train connections except Thalys and ICE;
4) NS International employees are the worst-informed imbeciles you can find at a railway station, so they won't even be able to tell you how to get anywhere.
I was very happy to experience some nostalgic train travelling in Poland this week. And by the way, if you are planning to do some international train-ing this summer, have a look at the Deutsche Bahn website, because that is where you will find all information you may need.

This is where my Cannonball team, just like the people in the photo, enjoyed some street comedy. Whenever you're in Paris and have some time left, the square in front of Centre Pompidou is a nice place to relax, especially when the weather is nice.

Unfavourable photo conditions: Empty sky, cars all over the place, and an inclined camera position in combination with wide-angle lense + architecture. Still, the empty skies are quite typical for winters in Eastern Europe. The type of cars are quite typical for a specific time frame - by looking at the cars in a photo, you can usually estimate the datum the photo was taken with an approximation of max 10 years. Architecture photography usually requires very sophisticated photo equipment, because of the straight lines that need to be respected. However, in this case it does reflect the impact that Karl Marx Allee is/was supposed to make on visitors: inclining walls to make the people feel small.
And that is how excuses and explanations can make almost any photo acceptable.

A Belgian guy got killed last week by two youngsters who were after his MP3-player. According to the first news releases, the suspects were of North-African origin. As it turns out, they now seem to be Polish. Eye witness reports are known to be a very doubtful evidence in criminal trials. Preception error is likely to take place because of traumatic stress and personal biases.
Apperently, this even applies to video recordings - proving once again that personal perception and facts are two completely different things.

Tickets for my next trip are secured. Together with my cousin Robin, I'm going to visit my other cousin Arjan in Normandy and spend some time in Paris. Arjan has been living in France since the end of the previous century and he has mixed up quite well with the local French population. In the photo below, he is advising two of his neighbours how to fix this pre-historical concrete mill.

BREAKING NEWS DEVELOPING STORY LIVE REPORT
I've got a new bike.
My previous one got stolen in quite a clumsy way. I just put it outside on the street, unlocked, when relocating furniture from my old apartment. And forgot to put it back upon completion of the relocation activities. Well, it was broken anyway and I could as well have kicked it into a canal before it got stolen. Damn flat tyre - bikes always seem to forget that they get bought to work for you and by means of protest always break down in a mutlitude of ways that is hard to imagine. Let's see for how long my new cycling tool will keep performing at the desired level...

Dutch Queen's Day usually takes place on April 30 (the birthday of the late/previous Dutch Queen Juliana). This year, it's one day early to avoid celebrations on Sunday - no idea who invented that and why. The preceding Queen's Eve took place yesterday. Especially the English youngsters who participated ae likely not to remember anything of the celebrations, yet claim the next day that it was one hilarious party.
