Max speed = 87 km/h
Posted 4 October 2006 - The Hague (NL):
Politicians talk rubbish and they are known for it. Traditionally, Dutch ministers of transportation are the dumbest of all their colleagues. On November 1st of last year, speed limits of 80 km/h were imposed (plus permanent speed control) on a number of stretches of highway around big cities. It was claimed that this would reduce congestion and air pollution. Which is about as credible as the National Railways claiming that new timetables are composed 'to serve travelers'.
Like all non-politicians expected, the 80 km/h zones led to massive congestions during week hours. Not so much because of the speed itself, but for the simple reason that whenever people slow down and they are many, they will eventually come to a standstill and get stuck in massive jams.
Who's fault is this? The drivers', claims our minister. They observe the speed limits to tighly. If we can please understand that 87 is a more appropriate speed for these 80 km/h zones and you will only get caught for speeding when driving faster than that. Nevertheless, the signs will keep saying 80 - please sort-of-disregard them.

Rome one year ago
Posted 26 October 2006 - The Hague (NL):
Last year on this day, I was walking around the city of Rome, taking plenty of photos and having a good time. Travel agenda for November: Texel Island with Maaike followed by London - possibly with Rody otherwise alone.

Plane spotting
Posted 27 October 2006 - The Hague (NL):
Spent some hours today taking photos along Schiphol's runway 24, which resulted in two nice photos of airline companies who have Amsterdam as a hub: Northwest Airlines (Airbus 330) and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines (Boeing 747). If you like photos of airliners, have a look at this page.
Special plans for tomorrow: touring along with the fire brigade of the Zeeland islands! Photos can be expected early in the evening.

Dark days before Christmas
Posted 30 October 2006 - The Hague (NL):
Summer is definitely over, we're done with daylight savings time and it's dark by the time the working day is done. This means less time for taking photos and more time for restructuring websites. Planned updatums for PhotoLogiX:
- Adding one page for special events;
- Adding 'buy photo' options to the PhotoLog;
- Adding a geographic search for the PhotoLog archive;
- Making up new photo projects.

Sesame Street effect
Posted 31 October 2006 - The Hague (NL):
I like it when things are clear and organised at first sight. But especially in photography or music, it's nice to have background layers which gives the whole some depth. The background layers should typically be more complicated and bring up questions with the audience, or possibly a predicted emotion, or a perceived task of what they are supposed to do next.
Below photo is maybe not the best ever example, but it does provide a rather clear overview of something. Then try to find all the cars in the photo (next step would be to count them..) and be amazed how many there are if you look well! PS If you like doing this, try to find how many people you can find in the first photo posted under 17 October (with zebra crossing). Seems to be zero but it's much more than that!
