Back on track

Posted 4 December 2007 - Lyon (FR):

Sorry for having been absent for a while. It`s been a bit hectic with traveling, yes I know I have been doing that for four months now and should have got used to it in the meantime, but traveling every single day like I did for the two weeks before ending up in Paris is really tiring – like reading long sentences similar to the precedent one. I have also been taking only very few photos, maybe I need a little rest.. Anyway, I will resume my Daily Photo operations per today. Hello again!

Presents

Posted 6 December 2007 - Lyon (FR):

Saint Nicholas was nice to me this year! Like my birthday, I celebrated this other important Dutch cultural event in company of fellow Dutchies. I got a box of chocolate bonbons and a can of foie gras. I will eat both on my trip from Lyon to Metz tomorrow. 5.5 Hours of train sitting, starting at 6h30 in the morning. But the landscape will be nice and I will take some comfortable train naps on the way so should be alright upon arrival. Photo: some industrial area in Lyon, earlier today.

Rainy day

Posted 7 December 2007 - Metz (FR):

All throughout my journey, I have been quite lucky with the weather. Some rain here and there, but nothing out of the ordinary and nothing disruptive. Oftentimes in rainy weather, I was not even walking around but sitting on board a bus or train. Like today on the way to Metz.

Cathing up and up

Posted 8 December 2007 - Metz (FR):

Trying to catch up, sorry for the delay, longing for Christmas. Here`s a quick snapshot from Paris, taken little over a week ago.

Strasbourg, check

Posted 9 Dec 2007 - Strasbourg (FR):

I obviously wanted to visit Strasbourg on my trip, because it`s one of the cities that together form the heart of the EU. I would have had to abandon my plan if I wasn`t so lucky to stay at François and Helena`s place in Metz. They had planned to go to a CouchSurfing meeting in Strasbourg, so I could join them and get there by buying some food instead of an expensive train ticket. Strasbourg is an interesting city, with many German city. Here`s a quick glance at the Christmas market. The people in the front are taking photos of the cathedral, which is the second tallest in France.

Du Luxe

Posted 10 December 2007 - Luxembourg (LU):

Luxembourg is cool! People speak tons of languages so you can almost choose in which language to address them! Luxembourgish is a little difficult but it resembles Dutch so I can at least sort of figure out what people talk about. It`s also very European, with lots of people from everywhere. It makes me feel at home, just like talking to people in Santiago strengthened my idea that whatever I am doing is quite interesting. I will stay around for two more days in the country, then head for Belgium. I will try to keep up with the writing, have been a bit slow, sorry about that. Apart from that, the days are depressingly short, can`t wait for them to get back to reasonable proportions.

Here`s another photo for the crossroad series:

On Luxembourgish TV

Posted 11 December 2007 - Luxembourg (LU):

I`m still in Luxembourg and used most of today to walk around the Plateau de Kirchberg, the financial and political part of Luxembourg. Below photo is a view from the bridge connecting it with the main city. Despite a rather hesitant start, it ended up being a really nice day, with a TV interview and lots of nice words from people working for the European Commission. Hopefully, it will lead to an exhibition of my Us Europeans portraits upon completion of the project. At least met some people with whom it`s certainly worth staying in touch.

Silent countryside

Posted 12 December 2007 - Wiltz (LU):

I`m in Wiltz today, and there`s not much happening here but that`s OK. Bad thing: lost my notebook with notes dating back as long as Portugal. Haven`t been able to find it. Well.. anyway, I was quite up to datum with the reports so bought a new notebook and decided not to feel too sorry about the other one.

Closer to home

Posted 13 December 2007 - Liège (BE):

Arriving in Liège means being closer to Holland then ever. Hence the photo of this traffic sign pointing the way to Maastricht. Only little over a week and I`ll be home for three weeks. How exciting!

By the way, delays were caused by some technical inconvenience: server was full. I relocated some files and can now keep uploading new images for a while again.

Unity gives strength

Posted 14 December 2007 - Liège (BE):

Belgium is suffering from a severe identity crisis, with some politicians claiming that the northern part of the country (Flanders) should become independent. Most of the population does not agree. Especially the people in the South (Wallony) are having a hard time. If Belgium splits up, they will be worst off economically. The situation is fairly complicated and I will certainly dedicate an Us Europeans article to the subject.

Below flags show the determination of the people in Wallony to keep Belgium a single country. They look a bit sad, as if Belgium lost the final of the World Cup football 2006 and as if people forgot to take their flags away since.

Louvain & Leuven

Posted 15 December 2007 - Louvain-la-Neuve (BE)

Last city in Wallony on my list is Louvain-la-Neuve, a city constructed from scratch in the 1970s after the Flemish university of Leuven decided to ban the French language from their institutions. Both cities are on equal distance from the language frontier that splits Dutch-speaking Flanders from French-speaking Wallony. Guess what tomorrow`s subject on Us Europeans will be, given the fact that my next Aufenthalt will be Leuven.

L`Union fait la force

Posted 16 December 2007 - Leuven (BE):

I tried to postpone it for a while but – internationally speaking – there is obviously one subject about Belgian that supersedes all other developments in the country: the language struggle. You can now access part one of the coverage about that subject on Us Europeans.

Arrived in Brussels

Posted 17 December 2007 - Leuven (BE):

I have been navigating along and over the language frontier over the last few days. It has been quite cold on either side, and Brussels is not much better.

Still, getting to Brussels is a good thing because it means I should be able to find `professional people` interested in my project. I have at least three meetings over the next three days: three opportunities to put my projects in the spotlights to those who really work with and for Europe. I will certainly keep you updatumd about the progress during the coming days! In the meanwhile, here`s another crossroad photo, with houses covered with red bricks again (that`s for pretty much the first time since I left home).

Heading home

Posted 20 December 2007 - Ghent (BE):

Ghent Railway Station this morning. Sorry for having been slow again. It`s very cold which makes my hands freeze and my camera`s batteries die. Moreover, my computer`s hard disk only has 2 Gb of free space left (= only 50 photos!). Time to get some new reserves!

My street

Posted 24 December 2007 - The Hague (NL):

During the last five months, several people have asked what my city is like and what the street I live in looks like. Here`s a quick photo I took earlier today:

No Christmas cards

Posted 26 December 2007 - The Hague (NL):

Sorry for not sending out any Christmas cards. I was indeed planning to, but couldn`t fit it into the schedule. I hope everybody visiting this blog has spent a nice Christmas, I`ll try a little harder next year for the Christmas cards!

Below is one of the photos I considered using:

Designed from scratch

Posted 29 December 2007 - The Hague (NL):

Photography is taking up again and it`s quite interesting to see my own country with foreign eyes. Here`s a picture from Almere, one of the cities designed from scratch, on the former bottom of the former Zuiderzee.

Afsluitdijk

Posted 30 December 2007 - The Hague (NL):

A nice piece of engineering which made the creation of Almere city (yesterday`s posting) possible. It`s the Afsluitdijk, which à la fois connects the provinces of Friesland and North Holland, and puts a frontier between the Waddenzee in the north and the IJsselmeer in the heart of The Netherlands.

Europe - Now

Posted 30 December 2007 - The Hague (NL):

I will try not to post double photos anymore and have therefore split the Afsluitdijk-posting in two. This is part II. Reason for this new policy: website Europa Nu has started to publish some of my photos and they prefer to use them one by one rather than having to cut them apart. Makes sense..

Flat and green

Posted 31 December 2007 - The Hague (NL):

Another photo from Friesland, which shows pretty much nothing but still gives a good impression of what Friesland is like. Flat, green, with quite some water and huge farms.
